Frequently asked questions

What is a tribute page?

Headway’s In Memory website provides families with a private and secure online platform to share their memories and support one another following the loss of a loved one.

It is simple to set up a tribute page, you can include as much or as little information as you wish. You can also upload images and videos of your loved one.

Family and friends can post their memories and messages of support.

Is there a cost?

This is a free resource provided by Headway to those who have lost loved ones and are connected to brain injury.

Where do the donations made in memory go?

All donations made via the tribute page will come directly to Headway – the brain injury association helping us support others affected by brain injury.

Will we get a running total of how much is raised in our loved one’s honour?

All donations made through a tribute page or associated event pages will be collated and added to a running total. In addition, fundraising pages set up for Headway through Justgiving and Virgin Money Giving can also be linked to individual tribute pages and money raised through these sites will also be reflected in the tribute total.

Who controls the content on a tribute page?

Only the person setting up the tribute can personalise or edit the page. As the page owner, you are in complete control of the content of the tribute page.

Can everyone see my tribute page?

That’s entirely up to you. You have the option of allowing people to search for your loved one’s tribute page or, if you'd prefer, the page can be set as private so that family and friends can only access it if the unique page link has been shared with them.

What if I have questions?

You can read instructions on setting up a tribute page or fundraising events below.

Setting up a tribute page

Setting up a Headway Tribute is a special way to remember the life of your loved one by enabling you to create your own unique, beautiful and lasting online memorial page in their name. It can be a place where you can share treasured memories and precious moments through posting your thoughts, photos and videos.

You can invite family and friends to view the page and post messages of support, remembrance and love. You also have the option for the page to take donations to support the vital work of Headway

To create your own tribute page, start by clicking the 'Create a tribute or event' link at the top of the website. From here, click on the 'Create a tribute' button.

Enter details of yourself and the person who you want to dedicate the page to. You can upload a banner image for the page, enter its title and write about your loved one. You can write as much or as little as you like, and don't worry - you can return to the page and edit it at a later date.

You also have some options to consider before you create your account:

  • Is this page private? By making a page private, you will stop it being found via the search facility on the homepage. It is only accessible via the dedicated address or the share options on the page.

  • Would you like to enable donations to be made in connection with this page? This website allows you to raise money for Headway - the brain injury association in memory of your loved one. If you would like to allow people to donate or set up fundraising events in memory, please select this option.

  • I would like to join Headway's mailing list to receive information about the charity's work. By selecting this option, you will be subscribed to our email mailing list. You will receive our regular Headway News Bitesize newsletter and other mailings relating to the charity's work.

  • Have you read the terms and conditions? Our terms and conditions explain how we use data gathered on this site. We always store your details securely, and will use them only for the purpose of hosting your tribute page.

Once you've created the page, we'll send you an email asking you to confirm your account. Just click the activation link in the email within two hours, and your tribute page will be activated.

You can share your page using the link in the bottom-right corner, or by copying the page address from your browser.

People who visit the page can leave tribute messages to share what the person means to them. If you have allowed donations, they can also give a gift to Headway and even set up fundraising events in memory.

Manage your page

As a tribute owner, you can manage and improve the page via your dashboard.

To access this, log in to the site using the link in the top-right corner, and then click on your name to see the options.

  • View tribute page will take you to the page as visitors would see.

  • Dashboard shows you all the recent activity on the page, such as tributes left by others, donations made in memory or fundraising events.
  • Profile allows you to change your details, such as your email address and profile picture.

The Tribute option gives you a range of features to manage and customise your page. You can:

  • Change the header image and update your story.
  • Change the privacy settings, and change whether you would like to accept donations through the page.
  • Add to your donation total with the 'Amount raised offline' box - which allows you to include any money that has been raised in memory, but not via this website or a Virgin Money Giving/Just Giving event.
  • Upload photos and videos of your loved one through the 'Image and video gallery' tab.
  • See and manage any messages that have been left by loved ones through the 'Tribute messages' tab.

If you make any changes, don't forget to click the 'Save' button at the bottom of the page.

Events in memory

If fundraising has been enabled on a page, you can set up one or more events to raise funds for Headway in memory.

Holding a fundraising event or conquering a personal challenge can be a fitting way to remember someone special.

You may want to host something yourself or take part in a local organised event. Alternatively Headway has many different activities for you to get involved with including marathons and runs, bike rides, treks and skydives; there is something for everyone.

Events can be set up by page owners as well as other people. The page owner will be asked to approve any events related to their tribute page before they are activated.

To set up an event, go to the page you would like to raise money in support of, and click the 'New event' button.

Enter all details on the form. You can choose to take donations through this website, enter an amount raised offline, or even link the event to an existing Virgin Money Giving or Just Giving page to ensure your fundraising total is up-to-date. Instructions for adding your Virgin Money Giving or Just Giving details are available on the create event page.

Once complete, new account holders will receive an email containing an activation link, which must be clicked within two hours to activate the event.
